Oprah Leadership Academy in Africa

Oprah Leadership Academy in Africa is one of its kind all girls’ boarding school situated at Henley on Klip in Meyerton south of Johannesburg. The leadership academy was built for bringing talented and academically girls to the fore front. Many of these bright students are forced by poverty to leave their education mid way.

Girls from the academy are groomed to be future leaders who will lead their communities from the darkness of poverty to the sunshine of prosperity. It is a dream project for Oprah and she has spared no effort in getting it fulfilled.

Every detail of the school, right from designing it, deciding on its interiors to interviewing all its 150 students was done by Oprah personally. The seed of this dream was implanted in her mind during her meeting with Nelson Mandela who had asked her to contribute to the education system of South Africa.

In order to groom them as future leaders the students are allotted to spend around 3000 hours to reach to their community by visiting the provinces. They get to collect and understand first hand information on environment, social and housing problems affecting the community.

The girls from the school also participated in a recent housing project with a non government organization to build around 11 houses. The girls also form part of a group spreading awareness about cancer affecting woman in particular.

Visits are also organized to farms and orphanages and homes for the elderly to give them a better perspective on the functioning of the society at large. Oprah Leadership Academy in Africa is in a way an endeavor to give back to the society.Winfrey, Oprah
